| Have you seen ChatGPT? It is amazing, if used for good, but can also be super-bad, and I predict it, and others like it will be a huge problem/benefit in future. I discovered it whilst watching Liron Segev's YouTube channel, a helpful tech guy who I often watch for tech tips and so on Or watch it here This is an example of what I have used it for, so far Neat ha! But also a bit scary | |

| I'm currently part of a university research group looking at ChatGPT responses to some quite high level questions, and we're ranking it's responses as -- on average -- a good undergraduate level. We're not computing people, but universities are concerned about coursework cheating as these platforms get better. It's not quite Master's level, because it's analytical skills, and existing research is not very good at the moment; but it's been improving and will continue to do so. We've also been comparing responses to the company's verification engine, to see how well it differentiates between ChatGPT vs. other bots vs. human responses. So far, software analysis picks out ChatGPT and bots from humans almost perfectly -- do not ask me how -- as a faculty member who grades student assignments all the time, I can't tell them apart. If I suspect, then I just flag something and pass it on to the people that verify it. I can't help but feel that we are entering realms of uncharted territory with this stuff. Nothing's ever been this good before. | |

| Well, when you fill something with as much knowledge and wisdom as you can, then ask it a question, it's not surprising the Right Wing Lunatics will get upset. If those are the sources for saying it's Left Wing and biased, that's a bit like asking Donald Trump if the last US presidential election was even-handed and objective And I can only imagine what an AI would write about Elon Musk Last edited by LiberalLesbo on 2023-02-10 12:55:38 | |

| Come on now...i thought we knew each other a bit 1 - Not right wing 2 - Not Murican 3 - Not Turmp supporter (see above) 4 - Professional Idiot not a Lunatic (this is debatable) If your gonna try an put me in a box and then attack that box then you need to get a better box than right wing lunatic The sources were not SAYING it was biased.....many people have found it to be by asking it simple questions..there were a lot more examples but they were the 1st two so i grabbed them and it's hardly filled with knowledge...it has no net access and only has what it's been programmed with to go by, which is selected net writings upto 2021....and nothing new since it's inception. Which is prolly why it answers like it does...hardly a game changer when all it can do is respond to written text only Just my opinion so far.... P.S.....try asking it to "compose a poem about race from a right wing lunatic point of view" and watch the sh1tshow begin | |

| At the university faculty I'm on, we've actually been firing it some tricky abstract and technical biological science questions, philosophy of science questions, and philosophy of education questions. It scores pretty much perfectly on factual regurgitation (as you'd expect), but gets bogged down when you start getting into higher reasoning on things like ethics, experimental protocol, and reasoning from recently discovered data (amongst other stuff). If you really want a show, start asking it advanced reasoning on the ethics of things like embryonic stem cell research, or how critical race theory informs the hiring and promotion of senior faculty in North American universities. --- aaaand even better, take the CRT response and paste it on a university faculty discussion page and watch the eruptions begin. It's not just TGx, I get in trouble everywhere We have noticed some dramatic changes in the responses to some of these questions in recent days... almost like someone has been tweaking the response algorithm/s Last edited by LiberalLesbo on 2023-02-10 14:06:25 | |

| So the independantly thinking AI needs tweeking to make it more....?...independantly thinking What you have from what i see is a machine that stores memory from the net....so it can answer fast with an algorithym that lets it form sentences from written text examples...?....i think that was called "Alexa" once upon a time...?...but at least that could make me a coffee at the same time Like most, if not all machines, it can easily be manipulated to give anyone the response they want, or are looking for, with enough attemps and tweeks to the question, as proven by many folk on whichever side of the fence you sit | |

| You're right B4ND1T69, it's a machine. The artificial in AI means it's still a machine and just a bunch of (admittedly) complex search and response algorithms. The fun giveaway -- to me -- was when we hit it with a very specific philosophy of science question, and it answered it well. But when we hit it with exactly the same question from 30 different accounts, the responses, whilst good, correct, and in proper intelligent prose, did not vary a great deal. Similar wording, phraseology, sentence structure throughout the answer. If I got a class of 30 hand that in, I'd have said they were all working together on the answer | |

| No, no, sorry, I wasn't saying I didn't want your point of view, that's the whole point of the forum like you said. No, I was thinking about when you were discussing about an AI in the hands of a powerful minority, and giving us their opinions on subjective issues. Sorry, I didn't make myself very plain there Personally, an AI giving me a perspective on something would be worse than useless, it would be distracting from original data. | |

| Absolutely agreed. I'm lucky in that between myself and my wife, the organizations that we are affiliated to allow us to access primary research journals on almost any topic. If we're interested in something, we don't have to rely on mainstream media, reporting, or even text books. We can get to first-hand research, tried and repeated by others, reviewed by other specialists in the field, and adhering to rigid protocols. You would be so astounded -- or maybe not -- by some of the downright lies that are spread (with massive uptake by respected news and social media), that the primary research just does not support. And I know I have "liberal" as a proud descriptor, but it is most definitely spread by both sides in a war of public opinion. And it's this -- more questionable -- material that bots like ChatGPT are mostly referring to -- I THINK (I'm not certain). As a result, a lot of what the bots give you back is factually based, but there are twists in its approach to things like ethics and value judgements. Just as science can tell you that embryonic stem cell research is a phenomenon that has potential for treating a widespread array of afflictions, but has little to say about the ethics involved; or that a woman's body reaches peak fertility in late teens to late 20s, but cannot speak to the ethics of fertility treatment for someone in their late 30s, nor a social custom (no more than 200 to 300 years ago), of child-bearing at age 12. These are societal value judgements that we learn as human beings from our moral and ethical perspectives. Morals and ethics change with times, knowledge/learning, and politics. A bot is never going to replicate human moral and ethical judgements, not least because they are a dynamic (ever-changing) variable. Just my thoughts. | |

| And I agree blue, I'm not sure my direction is that tangential, "pr, advertising, social and political engineering / propaganda" all take what we know and learn, then twist it to make their own message, and that -- as you so rightly point out -- is so prevalent that tech like ChatGPT is responding to it in whatever way it's algorithms are intended to. Once we have established that a phenomena occurs, I'm not surprised that tech like ChatGPT picks it up and reports on it... that's what it's intended to do "learn and report". It's just a bit depressing that it IS so prevalent that ChatGPT has picked up on it and is reporting it. | |

| Yeah, scientifically, that's an incredibly misleading paragraph. The first sentence is supported by evidence, and a "scientific theory" has a very specific meaning in science. Scientific theories include gravity and evolution: they are made up of laws and tremendous amounts of supporting evidence. They are NOT simply hypotheses, that is, ideas or notions of something. And the next section is incredibly misleading. SV40 has been found to be potentially carcinogenic in laboratory animals under certain laboratory conditions, and that definitely does NOT equate to being carcinogenic in humans. It just indicates that further study would be needed. The last sentence is entirely dubious... define "significant" for example. It could be said that any call for further study is a "significant cause for concern" when looking at public health. And yes, there are a lot of people that do not know enough about vaccine science that question vaccine safety, and there are many that have their own agenda that also question vaccine safety. This actually is a good part of my area of speciality. I work on the distribution patterns of organisms over space and time. That is, how they spread geographically, and over periods of time. Micro- and macro- (small and big) organisms show very similar distribution patterns, which can be analyzed, recorded and modelled in very similar ways. I'm a field biologist that collects data in the field and analyzes the patterns statistically. I spend my life in front of Excel and SPSS. Vaccines obviously alter the spread of certain viruses and we model how vaccinating sectors of society can alter the spread of certain pathogens under certain conditions. What ChatGPT is giving you there, is a simplistic slant on the topic, with a flavouring of populist misinformation. | |

| Absolutely... science is tentative: It never reaches an "absolute truth". There will always be room for better data, better results to further refine a topic. You can say that a phenomenon is factual, and based on evidence (i.e., evolution is change in a population over time), but the details of how that phenomenon occurs are always open to investigation and further refinement. Any professional scientist who claims an "absolute truth" needs to go back to school. I kind of side with an old professor of mine who started one of our courses with, "True science stands ready to throw out all that has gone before when given superior evidence in the now. That is the difference between the methodological observation and investigation of nature, and the dogma of historical texts." I have that in my old notebook, and I got him to sign the page when I graduated. The page is in a frame on my office wall. | |

| If you ask it a "political" question, it gives the current opinion, though if asked anything on covid, it states its data is only up Sept 21. Ask it to write a poem, and it does great. Ask it to answer anything non political and is does reasonably well. It is only as good as the data it has access to, so is open to manipulation by which ever trend of thought programs it. | |
